MOM PROBLEMS #03072014: CRAZY HAT DAY

MOM PROBLEMS #03072014: CRAZY HAT DAY

March 7, 2014 | MAMA CHICKPEA, MOM PROBLEMS

As a finale to Dr. Seuss’s Birthday Week Extravaganza, my kiddos needed “crazy hats” to wear.

So, about a week ago my next question to myself was, “After ‘feather-covered Thing 1 & 2 wigs,’ what exactly COULD I do for a ‘crazy hat?!?’ I am a crafty supermom, but jeez, there was so little notice here, and I haven’t done laundry in three days…”

Mama being sick the whole week didn’t help, or perhaps, it did!??? Perhaps, it helped me dig into the more delusional parts of my knitted psyche? We will never know. What we do know, though, is what I came up with…

Knitted mohawk & cabbage kid wigs!  Aren’t they SUPER CUTE?…

My “mohawk wig” was so simple.  I knit a very BASIC circular hat with a cotton/poly yarn (size varies based on yarn recommendations for gauge.) I am not much of a pattern follower, so I tend to guess on stitches and adjust until I’m happy with the fit. Most people do not guess-knit like me, however, and prefer a well-written pattern. This I cannot give you, but, there are a million free patterns online if you search. Make sure to not knit a hat with too small a gauge, or you may go loopy trying to tie all the little pieces it needs for a luscious, thick strip of hair! My gauge worked with size 7 needles. After I had a basic knit hat I liked, I cut “lots” (and, this number varies depending on the look and fullness you want) of 4-5″ pieces in my mohawk yarn to knot tie in a mohawk shape, starting at the forehead, and finishing at the nape of the neck. The “look” as I was working, resembled latch hook crafts I played with as a kid. The technique I used was a very similar principle. I cut off any stray hairs once I was done, to give it more of a unified length overall.

My cabbage kid hat was a bit crazier. You can get the instructions down below, or search for similar wig patterns online.

I think I enjoy the artistic chaos of designing my own approach to things. Sometimes, it’s the best part of the story. I encourage any mama out there, to not be afraid to be imperfect. Art isn’t about perfection, nor is motherhood!

XOXO~~
